Navigating in uncertain waters: embracing the uncontrollable

It’s a common belief that a leader should always be in control of everything. However, the world and our lives are brimming with change. Holding on to the belief of omnipresent control can not only strain a leader mentally but can also affect team morale and negatively impact innovation.

Every leader has a sphere of direct control (strategy formulations, hiring, immediate decision-making etc.). Outside of this sphere lies a vast amount a vast realm of influence that you have no control over. Striking the right balance between acceptance and influence is crucial.

As a leader, you should focus not on mastering all variables but discerning which elements can be influenced. True leadership is about guiding with a gentle hand, inspiring more than imposing, and ensuring that decisions are informed, inclusive, and resonant with the team's shared vision.

Knowing when to lead and when to follow is vital. Some situations, despite best efforts, remain beyond control. In these moments, acceptance becomes a leader's greatest ally. It's about understanding that the journey, with its ups and downs, is as valuable as any intended outcome. Each unforeseen challenge offers a lesson. By framing these as learning opportunities, you not only adapt but also foster a growth mindset within your team. Don’t hesitate to show your team that it's okay to pivot when needed. Your adaptability sets the tone for the entire team.

Leadership, in its essence, isn't about having all the answers. It's about navigating uncertainties with grace, empowering teams to thrive amidst challenges, and recognizing when to steer the ship and when to let the currents guide the way.
